About Ms. Hancock

Education: "We must take adventures in order to know where we truly belong."

I began my adventure in pursuit of becoming an elementary educator after several years of experience working with children. I served as a classroom aide for the Headstart program, a camp coordinator for the YMCA, a before and after school Y Kids teacher, a preschool teacher for Kids R Kids, and a summer camp counselor at the Memphis Zoo. I also spent a few years as a nanny while I attended the elementary education program at the University of Mississippi. I proudly graduated with honors receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the U of M in 2014 with highly qualified endorsements in science, history and english. 

Experience: My adventure continued as I landed my dream job as 5th grade math and science teacher for Desoto County Schools. I began my first year teaching for Horn Lake Intermediate School for the 2014-2015 school year. I had previously student taught in a DCS 5th grade math and science classroom and fell in love with every aspect of the grade level and content. I felt like I had found where I belonged. Since beginning this part of my adventure, I have attended several professional development trainings to guide my journey.

Throughout the 2014-2015 I attended several math development trainings where hands on activities were presented that were targeted specifically for our fifth grade curriculum. These activities and strategies are implemented daily in your child's math lessons.

I was able to attend the Kagan week long training in Orlando Florida in 2016 where I learned several hands on strategies for cooperative learning. I am excited to announce that these strategies have helped shape the classroom for this school year. Kagan has provided our classroom with structures that ensure that every student is an active member of our learning community.

I also attended the Mississippi RIDES training where I participated in several hands on science activities to be used in the classroom. Students are now able to be provided with materials for experiments and activities for hands on learning.

I am elated to continue to grow as a professional as my passion is ignited at these trainings. My last training was a year long venture attending the Mississippi Science Teacher's Leadership Academy through the University of Mississippi. This academy lasted for the 2018 - 2019 school year and involved several weeks of training in the summer. The hands on, STEM based approach has really influenced my classroom style that allows for the greatest differentiated learning in an ever changing environment.

Bio: I had the most amazing experience visiting Costa Rica while studying tropical botany in the rainforest. I am completely in love with science and math and am elated to share that love in the classroom. I also have a true passion for Reading and Writing.
